It is now available to watch on the Punto Y Raya YouTube Channel. In this master class he gives us an incredible archaeological dig (as he introduces his class) into the early days of computer graphics and how he made his computer animated graphic films. Incredibly, he shows a short excerpt of one of his first computer graphic films made at the JPL (Jet Propulsion Lab, Pasadena, California in 1974.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMuWrpDtfYFeJ28WirKauUD3yHTZJNg3pXqua5Uniydh9It49wpyEfHKCuvadNWzQvDXQGP3daJ7TPiiOL1AqrNAofG8-Ir__U0J6dAb9KzvhWNSEsbMsRBocaYtzxgBhnGrSfbaL3G_j9yH7XN25Eq2PoezV-MYZdlDI4WoQHhhDLIBh5HAAsVQ/s795/Screenshot%202024-03-03%20at%2018.33.16.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="322" data-original-width="795" height="261" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMuWrpDtfYFeJ28WirKauUD3yHTZJNg3pXqua5Uniydh9It49wpyEfHKCuvadNWzQvDXQGP3daJ7TPiiOL1AqrNAofG8-Ir__U0J6dAb9KzvhWNSEsbMsRBocaYtzxgBhnGrSfbaL3G_j9yH7XN25Eq2PoezV-MYZdlDI4WoQHhhDLIBh5HAAsVQ/w640-h261/Screenshot%202024-03-03%20at%2018.33.16.png" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p><b>Excerpt of First Fig by Larry Cuba 1974</b></p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/GbvVlDWtvkg?si=juITSJVFSkp55d4T&start=701" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe></div>Maura McDonnellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08621622002226523143noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12238339.post-67581545386777662882023-10-26T15:14:00.005+01:002023-10-26T15:14:44.575+01:00A Taste of Synaesthesia - Art Exhibition - LondonNine Lyrae Productions in collaboration with Brunel University London in celebration of the 2023 Artist in Residence.

Perfect geometries merge with chaotic micro motions. The music is a composition by Cobi van Tonder, titled 'Gala', which consists of micro tones, vibrations of varying intensities, macro gestures. I created this visual in 2018 in collaboration with Cobi van Tonder and discussions with her on a selection of her micro-tonal music compositions. I picked her piece 'Gala' to work with for a visual music treatment.
I loved creating the visuals for Cobi's meditative and evocative music. Cobi is an amazing music composer and all round talented person. Her music is beautiful. After listening to her music, I was drawn to certain colours and textures and motions, resulting in pink and an alchemy of gold.

Inspired by Debora Bernagozzi’s curated show titled Performing Media: Works by Signal Culture Artists, "Performing Media", as Debora called it, eloquently encapsulates the performance of multimedia works that underpin all the events of the current festival, named after that exhibition. Over the years, co-founders Ryan Olivier and Eric Souther came to define performing media as a genre that uses multimedia elements in a performative manner, which so far has come to include live audio-visual performances, generative media processes, and edits/recordings of real-time captures. This evolving definition of performing media is re-evaluated each year along with the developing medium.</p><p>Now in its seventh year, the Performing Media Festival [PMF~ 2023] will feature special guest artist <a href="https://www.sabinacovarrubias.com/">Sabina Covarrubias</a> (PhD), headliners <a href="https://www.afterours.band/">After Ours</a> (Eli Kahn & Arthur Schroeder), electronic music ensemble the <a href="https://arts.iusb.edu/academic-departments/music/music-areas/music-tech-program/electronic-ensemble.html">Audio Visual Collective</a>, and a full roster of instrumentalists from <a href="https://ensembleconcept21.com/">Ensemble Concept/21</a> (EC/21). The festival will take place across the city at the <a href="https://southbendart.org/see/performing-media-festival">South Bend Museum of Art</a> (January 14th - March 19th), on the campus of <a href="https://www.iusb.edu/">Indiana University South Bend</a> (Mar 6th - 10th), at the arts incubator Langlab South Bend (March 10th), and on the campus of the <a href="https://tour.nd.edu/locations/oneill-hall/">University of Notre Dame</a> (March 27th). In addition to our invited guests, over 60 artists were selected from our international call for works to showcase their works throughout the festival. All events are free and open to the public.</p><p><a href="http://www.performingmediafestival.com">www.performingmediafestival.com</a><br />South Bend, Indiana</p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXGITtnkMoKlBcQfOS6IQUbEk4D9iQnR9IfdjM1DcmvIzWCCe8tBt2VOYFKODmetwz4MLNcic5WApx-uwjSJE62jfU1T72y7iYyAQHj0taAXO1RzR472l0HGmmX1dFObkIWjods2u3MU0_fdibyRsB6zv7Xm7sIY-W0e6Es1p3d8vrlun5CCA/s936/PerformingMediaFestival.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="Performing Media Festival" border="0" data-original-height="356" data-original-width="936" height="244" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXGITtnkMoKlBcQfOS6IQUbEk4D9iQnR9IfdjM1DcmvIzWCCe8tBt2VOYFKODmetwz4MLNcic5WApx-uwjSJE62jfU1T72y7iYyAQHj0taAXO1RzR472l0HGmmX1dFObkIWjods2u3MU0_fdibyRsB6zv7Xm7sIY-W0e6Es1p3d8vrlun5CCA/w640-h244/PerformingMediaFestival.png" title="Performing Media Festival, Indiana" width="640" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Performing Media Festival, South Bend, Indiana - 2023</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><p><b>SBMA Installation</b>: [January 14th - March 19th] Wednesdays - Sundays 12:00 - 5:00 PM: South Bend Museum of Art</p><p>The curatorial staff at the South Bend Museum of Art have installed a collection of works in both the Project Room and Weikamp Galleries, many of which reflect on nature or perform it through media. Live Visuals is both an overarching history of real-time visuals and audio-visual art and a crucial source for understanding the various theories about audio-visual synchronization. With the inclusion of an overview of various forms of contemporary practice in Live Visuals culture – from VJing to immersive environments, architecture to design – Live Visuals also presents the key ideas of practitioners who work with the visual in a live context.
The event will feature presentations by chapter authors, a panel with Live Visuals specialists such as Chris Allen from the Light Surgeons, Scratch video artist George Barber, and Stefan Arisona from Corebounce and Scheinwerfer VJ collective. A historical reel featuring some classics in audio-visual culture will also be screened.

<p>It is very exciting to see the cover photo for the just published journal - Synaesthesia: Cross-Sensory Aspects of Cognitive Activity Across Science and Art is of a photograph from the multimedia concert in which pianist Svetlana Rudenko and I (visuals) collaborated on in Moscow in 2019.</p>
<p>Anton Dorso has edited the journal bringing together and documenting all the presentations, papers, art exhibits, concerts, and all aspects of the conference. See CC Harts post below for links to the journal and for details and how to purchase.</p>
<p>The international conference was organised by the International Association of Synaesthetes, Artists and Scientists and was held in Moscow in 2019 and huge thanks especially to CC Hart for all she did to coordinate a very large international and local gathering.</p>
<p>I attended this conference and it was an incredible gathering of artists and scientists and academics.
The multimedia concert that Svetlana Rudenko and I presented (Svetlana Piano and Maura Visuals) was held at the Conservatory, Small Hall, Bolshaya Nikitskaya Street, Moscow. Svetlana and I collaborated on two concerts and a paper presentation and we had a very moving visit to Alexander Scriabin 's museum.</p>

You just watch and listen, then. If, on the other hand, you interact via touch, mouse or keyboard, it enters 'interactive mode' and responds to you.</p><p>As Jim further explains: "Click the background until it's all funky—or click and hold for zipFunk, which fast-forwards you into the unknown, the interzone, through revolutions of the meanometer color pie at top left. Set the speed of meaning slider, the audio pitch range, anywhere from 10 octaves down to 2 octaves up. You glimpse different worlds of meaning in the different levels of pitch—though the 5-second audio source sound is vocal—of the word 'meaning' intoned thrice, played backwards once, forwards twice.</p><p>...This is the enigma of meaning—not a shortage of it."</p><p>Best with headphones.</p><p>Video demonstration and talk by Andrews on Enigma n2022</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/JX8SWu6tAoc" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe></div><br /><p><br /></p><p></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">Further Information</h3>Interactive Art and Music App: Enigma n2022<br />https://enigman.vispo.com/<p></p><p>Watch on Youtube<br />https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JX8SWu6tAoc</p><p>Jim Andrews Website<br />https://vispo.com/cv/ja.htm</p><p>Essay on Enigma n2022 by Jim Andrews<br />https://vispo.com/writings/essays/Enigman2022.pdf</p>Maura McDonnellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08621622002226523143noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12238339.post-24802279456641295032022-05-19T15:42:00.007+01:002022-05-20T16:43:11.614+01:00PUBLICATION: Synesthesia: intersensory aspects of cognitive activity in science and art<p><span style="background-color: white;">PUBLICATION: </span><span face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; color: #212529; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 700;">Synesthesia: intersensory aspects of cognitive activity in science and art</span></p><p></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCw3bBdY6y6bMGMhoOgd77pZqId1-46EpjOT_Me-YRAmFCVqdDmq4hsvjs_SsEsZ7PeKtcpaS8OC_6EVy69plhH7q-N4pYI9YANKiUZ9RF40lKcD7U8is-arcVkVKgO8ana-_bpaSCSfoGNYqQ4GqcDVAnfUAxElYPFWMUkDRmxZi3W-GPM4U/s1634/Screenshot%202022-05-20%20at%2016.38.04.png" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="888" data-original-width="1634" height="347" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCw3bBdY6y6bMGMhoOgd77pZqId1-46EpjOT_Me-YRAmFCVqdDmq4hsvjs_SsEsZ7PeKtcpaS8OC_6EVy69plhH7q-N4pYI9YANKiUZ9RF40lKcD7U8is-arcVkVKgO8ana-_bpaSCSfoGNYqQ4GqcDVAnfUAxElYPFWMUkDRmxZi3W-GPM4U/w640-h347/Screenshot%202022-05-20%20at%2016.38.04.png" width="640" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Svetlana Rudenko (Pianist) and Maura McDonnell (Visual Music Artist) - Visual Music Collaboration on Scriabin Piano Sonata No.5., Moscow, 2019<br /></td></tr></tbody></table><p></p><p><span face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" style="background-color: white; color: #212529; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 700;">Cover of Publication:</span></p><p></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmQyyyQyeCQQqtyJyHxyIe0TPlCrJNf1y3x-_pydlmhCc8vX7Yya7qrOmfFbh7NOUbCVn_2NGbUrv7jV7vBawuCRIf3i1U_74ppLihhu5Oie6F8s4WPy0ifJLBNSagccoAobgGTNUK27NHFb2_XQCrEVzLq9BbT56bjDol6qatb0L6lDN_SiE/s1396/Screenshot%202022-05-19%20at%2015.27.59.png" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="Moscow International conference Synaesthesia: Cross-Sensory Aspects of Cognition Across Science and Art." border="0" data-original-height="1396" data-original-width="1042" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmQyyyQyeCQQqtyJyHxyIe0TPlCrJNf1y3x-_pydlmhCc8vX7Yya7qrOmfFbh7NOUbCVn_2NGbUrv7jV7vBawuCRIf3i1U_74ppLihhu5Oie6F8s4WPy0ifJLBNSagccoAobgGTNUK27NHFb2_XQCrEVzLq9BbT56bjDol6qatb0L6lDN_SiE/w478-h640/Screenshot%202022-05-19%20at%2015.27.59.png" title="Moscow International conference Synaesthesia: Cross-Sensory Aspects of Cognition Across Science and Art." width="478" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Proceedings of the II International Conference of the International Association of Synesthetes, Artists and Scientists (IASAS)</td></tr></tbody></table><span style="background-color: white;"><br /><span face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" style="color: #212529;"><br /></span></span><div><span style="background-color: white;"><span face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" style="color: #212529;">The book consists of the proceedings and materials of the II International Conference of the International Association of Synesthetes, Artists and Scientists (IASAS). Several musicians, music ensembles, artists, producers, composers brought us over 15 virtual performances with 33 world premieres of new music compositions and it was streamed on http://newmusicdublin.ie. A quote of the sheer effort to bring this festival to fruition is below.
<blockquote>So New Music Dublin 2021 is, explicitly, a festival for lockdown conditions. It’s a set of ideas, a programme made up of solutions to the question posed above: how do we make music together, when we can’t be together?
These solutions stretch from how to get orchestras back together – both on stage, and remotely – through to making music individually, and from music beamed-over-thousands-of-miles internationally, to wholly unobserved and unwitnessed private music-making. Every event in New Music Dublin is framed and presented in this spirit of exploration, enquiry and engagement, of existing despite the existential threats we all face.</blockquote>

Several of the music groups such as the <a href="https://www.crashensemble.com">Crash Ensemble</a>, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/evlanasinfonietta/">Evlana</a>, <a href="https://www.kirkosensemble.com">Kirkos Ensemble</a>, and National Symphony Orchestra crafted music performances for online viewing and playback. <h3 style="text-align: left;">Crash Ensemble</h3><div>The Crash Ensemble commisioned many new music works from up and coming and established composers. What is of interest to this visual music blog was how the use of the visual element was used to broadcast the performance of these works online to create a really interesting online experience of new music. Crash Ensemble's videographer <a href="https://www.crashensemble.com/personnel/laura-sheeran">Laura Sheeran</a> produced several video's for Crash Ensemble's [R E A C T I O N S] music composer commissions which were presented across three concerts held during the festival - This Is The Space Part I - 24 April 2021; WingForm - 24 April 2021; This Is The Space Part II - 25 April 2021; Granulated Frequencies - 25 April 2021. As well as the Free State 13 commusions, Nine composers were also invited to create a new composition scored for two instruments from the ensemble and to explore their response to the pandemic. The Primitive includes fauna, flora, and the Earth itself with its precious stones, minerals, and metals. The pulsating foliage and advanced interfaces that emerge in the biosphere serve as sacred artifacts, visions of a futurist environment. Through crossbreeds of biotic and technological systems, animism for the Digital Age presents new possibilities for evolution and strives for Post-Human nirvana. </p><p>Freska's sonic palette is not ashamed of its deep blend of traditional sounds and modern rhythms, and tries to immerse the listener in its idea of narrating a described state of nature.</p><p>Ambient landscapes, dreamy chords, classical guitar and unhurried beat ' Flows ' is imbued with the sound vision of a natural interaction and evolution.</p><p>The 2 versions of Flows are available on all digital platforms through Freska imprint ‘Freska Musik’.</p><p><b>About Artists:</b></p><p>-- AUJIK’s multi-media works have been showcased in galleries, museums, and festivals worldwide including the Prix Ars Electronica 2011, OneDotZero London BFI 2011/2013/2016, SIGGRAPH Asia, CMoDA Beijing, Biwako Biennale 2012,2014, 2018.
